The Philadelphia Flyers have hired a new General Manager just weeks before the trade deadline. Brian Sawchuk will take over the reigns. He has already made an immediate impact on the team. We discuss these changes below....
Just hours after being hired on February 25th GM Brian Sawchuk has made his mark on this team. Right from the get go he has said that no one is safe as he wants to mould this team to fit his liking. The first trade was just to get his feet wet and was a minor one and saw Kurt Sauer come to town in exchange for Cory Sarich and a 5th round draft choice in 2012. After that he felt more confident and made a huge splash by acquring star center Paul Stastny from the Washington Capitals. Also coming to Philly was young dman Shaone Morrisson and veteran Tom Kostopolous. Leaving town was struggling winger Tuomo Ruutu, Niklas Hjalmarsson, prospect Alex Avtsin and a 1st round draft choice in 2011.
After that trade it was decided that some salary was needed to move and that saw a deal go down with the San Jose Mermaids. Entering town was Steven Downie, Chris Higgins and youngster Zack Smith. Heading out was overpayed winger Eric Fehr, Newly acquired Tom Kostoplous and depth forward Frans Nielsen.
The next morning after reviewing the previous trades there was lots of talks starting to happen and quickly the trades continued. Next in line was a date with the Phoenix Coyotes. Sniper David Jones and young up and coming dman Jack Hillen were acquired by sending ME Vlasic and veteran Brendan Morrow the other way. This was more of a salary move but the GM is more than happy with his return in this trade.
The final deal was the biggest of them all and changed the face of this franchise. Jaro Halak, Eric Staal and Sheldon Souray were sent packing to Buffalo. In return the Flyers saw franchise players Pekka Rinne and Brent Seabrook come into town along with depth player Chris Kelly. The Flyers dropped more salary in this trade but more importantly solidified the future in goal and on the point for years to come.
So as you can see Sawchuk has been busy in his first day behind the reigns. He has vowed that there are moves to be made yet and has released new list of available players to the league.
